Android phones are powerful. But they’re not perfect. Every Android user runs into problems sometimes. Apps crash. Battery drains fast. The phone gets hot. Screens freeze. Calls drop. WiFi acts strange. The good news is most of these problems have simple fixes. You don’t need to be a technician. You don’t need special tools. You just need to know what to do.
I’ve collected the 20 most common Android problems people face every day. For each one, I’ll give you the fastest fix and a deeper fix if the first one doesn’t work.
Let’s get started.
Problem 1: Phone Won’t Turn On
You press the power button. Nothing happens. The screen stays black.
Fast fix: Press and hold the Power button and Volume Down button together for 20 seconds. This force restarts most Android phones.
Deeper fix: Plug your phone into a charger for 30 minutes. If it still won’t turn on, the battery might be completely dead or the charging port might be broken. Try a different charger and cable. If nothing works, take it to a repair shop.
Problem 2: Apps Keep Crashing
You open an app. It works for a few seconds. Then it closes by itself. Sometimes you see “App keeps stopping.”
Fast fix: Go to Settings → Apps → find the crashing app → Storage & cache → Clear cache. Open the app again.
Deeper fix: If clearing cache doesn’t work, uninstall the app and reinstall it from the Play Store. If many apps are crashing, restart your phone. If that doesn’t help, boot into Safe Mode (press and hold Power off button) to see if a third-party app is causing the problem.
Problem 3: Battery Drains Too Fast
Your phone was at 100 percent an hour ago. Now it’s at 60 percent. You haven’t even used it much.
Fast fix: Go to Settings → Battery → Battery usage. See which app is using the most power. Uninstall or restrict that app.
Deeper fix: Turn off battery-draining features: location, Bluetooth, WiFi scanning, and screen brightness. Go to Settings → Display → turn on Dark mode. Go to Settings → Battery → turn on Battery saver. If the problem continues, your battery might be old. Replace it at a repair shop.
Problem 4: Phone Overheating
Your phone feels hot in your hand. It might even show a temperature warning.
Fast fix: Close all apps. Turn off the screen. Remove the phone case. Move to a cooler place. Don’t charge the phone until it cools down.
Deeper fix: Check what you were doing when it got hot. Gaming, video recording, and GPS navigation make phones hot. That’s normal. But if your phone gets hot doing nothing, check for rogue apps in Settings → Battery. Also turn off Background activity for apps that don’t need it. If overheating continues, your battery might be damaged.
Problem 5: Slow Performance
Everything takes forever. Apps open slowly. Scrolling is choppy. Typing lags.
Fast fix: Restart your phone. This clears temporary files and closes background apps.
Deeper fix: Free up storage space. Go to Settings → Storage. If you have less than 2GB free, delete old photos, videos, and unused apps. Also turn off animation effects: Go to Settings → About phone → tap Build Number 7 times to enable Developer Options → go back to System → Developer Options → set Window animation scale, Transition animation scale, and Animator duration scale to 0.5x or off.
Problem 6: Screen Freezes
You tap the screen. Nothing happens. Swipe. Nothing happens. The screen is stuck.
Fast fix: Press and hold Power + Volume Down for 15 seconds to force restart.
Deeper fix: If the screen freezes often, check for a bad app. Boot into Safe Mode. If the screen doesn’t freeze in Safe Mode, a downloaded app is the problem. Uninstall recently installed apps. If the screen freezes even in Safe Mode, you might have a hardware problem. Clean your screen. Remove your screen protector. If that doesn’t help, take it to a repair shop.
Problem 7: Phone Keeps Restarting by Itself
You’re using your phone. Suddenly it restarts. Then it restarts again a few minutes later.
Fast fix: Check your power button. Is it stuck? Press it a few times to loosen it. Also check if your phone case is pressing the button.
Deeper fix: Boot into Safe Mode. If the phone doesn’t restart in Safe Mode, a third-party app is causing the problem. Uninstall recently installed apps. If it restarts even in Safe Mode, go to Settings → System → Reset options → Factory reset. If that doesn’t fix it, the problem is hardware. Likely the battery or the power button.
Problem 8: Can’t Hear Caller or Caller Can’t Hear You
You answer a call. You hear nothing. Or the other person hears nothing.
Fast fix: Turn off Bluetooth. Your phone might be trying to use a Bluetooth device that’s not nearby.
Deeper fix: Clean the microphone and speaker holes on the bottom and top of your phone with a soft toothbrush. Restart your phone. Check that Do Not Disturb is off. Test the microphone with a voice recorder. If that works but calls don’t, your phone app might have a problem. Go to Settings → Apps → Phone → Storage & cache → Clear cache. If nothing works, the microphone or speaker might be broken.
Problem 9: Apps Won’t Download from Play Store
You tap Install. It says “Downloading” but never finishes. Or it says “Waiting for network” or “Error 491.”
Fast fix: Clear Play Store cache. Go to Settings → Apps → Google Play Store → Storage & cache → Clear cache. Then try again.
Deeper fix: If that doesn’t work, clear Google Play Services cache too. Go to Settings → Apps → Show system → Google Play Services → Storage & cache → Clear cache. Then restart your phone. If still not working, remove and re-add your Google account. Go to Settings → Accounts → Google → Remove account. Then add it back.
Problem 10: Phone Won’t Charge
You plug in your phone. Nothing happens. No charging icon. No light.
Fast fix: Try a different charger and a different cable. The most common problem is a broken cable.
Deeper fix: Clean the charging port. Turn off your phone. Use a toothpick or a plastic floss pick to gently remove lint from the USB port. Do not use metal. Blow into the port. If cleaning doesn’t work, restart your phone while plugged in. If nothing works, the charging port or battery might be broken. Take it to a repair shop.
Problem 11: Bluetooth Won’t Connect or Keeps Disconnecting
You try to pair your headphones. They won’t connect. Or they connect but disconnect every few minutes.
Fast fix: Turn Bluetooth off and on. Go to Settings → Connected devices → Bluetooth → toggle off, wait 10 seconds, toggle on.
Deeper fix: Forget the Bluetooth device and pair again. Go to Bluetooth settings → tap the gear next to the device → Forget. Then pair from scratch. If that doesn’t work, go to Settings → System → Reset options → Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth. This deletes all paired devices but often fixes connection problems.
Problem 12: Notifications Not Showing
You know you got a message. But no notification appears. Or the notification shows up 10 minutes late.
Fast fix: Turn off Do Not Disturb. Swipe down to open Quick Settings. If the DND icon is on, tap it to turn it off.
Deeper fix: Check notification settings for specific apps. Go to Settings → Apps → find the app → Notifications → make sure “Show notifications” is on. Also check Settings → Apps → Special app access → Notification access → make sure apps like “Notification listener” are off if you don’t use them. Go to Settings → Battery → turn off Adaptive battery for apps that need instant notifications.
Problem 13: Storage Full but You Don’t Know Why
Your phone says storage is full. But you don’t have many photos or videos.
Fast fix: Go to Settings → Storage. Look at what’s taking up space. You’ll see categories like Apps, Images, Videos, Audio, Documents.
Deeper fix: Clear app caches. Go to Settings → Storage → Tap “Free up space” or “Clean.” Android will suggest clearing cached data for all apps. Tap to clear. This can free up several gigabytes. Also check your Downloads folder. Delete old files you don’t need. Check WhatsApp media. WhatsApp saves every photo and video sent to you. Go to WhatsApp → Settings → Storage and data → Manage storage to delete old media.
Problem 14: Phone Keeps Unlocking in Your Pocket
You pull out your phone. The screen is on. Apps are open. You even called someone accidentally.
Fast fix: Turn off Lift to wake and Tap to wake. Go to Settings → Display → turn off Lift to check phone and Tap to wake.
Deeper fix: Turn on Pocket mode. Search your Settings for “Pocket mode” or “Accidental touch protection.” Turn it on. This uses the proximity sensor to detect when your phone is in your pocket and ignores touches. Also turn off Smart Lock if you have it enabled. Go to Settings → Security → Smart Lock → remove trusted places or devices that might be keeping your phone unlocked.
Problem 15: Screen Dims by Itself
You’re reading something. The screen suddenly gets darker. You turn the brightness up. It gets dark again.
Fast fix: Turn off Auto-brightness. Go to Settings → Display → Adaptive brightness → turn it off.
Deeper fix: Your phone might be overheating. When phones get hot, they dim the screen automatically to cool down. Close apps and let the phone cool. Also check if Battery saver is on. Battery saver dims the screen to save power. Turn it off in Quick Settings or Settings → Battery.
Problem 16: Text Messages Won’t Send or Receive
You send a text. It says “Sending” forever. Or it fails. Or you’re not getting texts from people.
Fast fix: Restart your phone. Turn Airplane mode on for 10 seconds, then off.
Deeper fix: Check your SMS app’s settings. Make sure it’s set as the default SMS app. Go to Settings → Apps → Default apps → SMS app → choose your messaging app. Clear the app’s cache. Go to Settings → Apps → Messages → Storage & cache → Clear cache. If you use RCS (chat features), turn it off and on again in the Messages app settings. If nothing works, contact your carrier.
Problem 17: Google Assistant Won’t Respond
You say “Hey Google” or “OK Google.” Nothing happens.
Fast fix: Turn off and on Hey Google detection. Open Google app → profile picture → Settings → Google Assistant → Hey Google & Voice Match → turn off Hey Google, restart phone, turn it back on.
Deeper fix: Retrain your voice model. In the same settings, tap Voice Match → Retrain voice model. Follow the prompts. Also check your microphone. Open a voice recorder app. Record something. Play it back. If the microphone doesn’t work, fix that first. Check that Google app has microphone permission. Settings → Apps → Google → Permissions → Microphone → Allow.
Problem 18: Photos Not Saving to Gallery
You take a picture. It looks fine on the camera screen. But when you open your gallery, it’s not there.
Fast fix: Restart your phone. This often fixes temporary saving issues.
Deeper fix: Check that the camera app has storage permission. Settings → Apps → Camera → Permissions → Storage or Files → Allow. Free up storage space. If your phone is full, new photos can’t be saved. Go to Settings → Storage and delete old files. Clear camera app cache. Settings → Apps → Camera → Storage & cache → Clear cache. If you use an SD card, your SD card might be corrupted. Remove the SD card and see if photos save to internal storage.
Problem 19: Phone Vibrates Randomly for No Reason
Your phone vibrates. You check. No notification. No message. Nothing.
Fast fix: Check for app notifications that are set to silent. Go to Settings → Notifications → Notification history. This shows you every notification your phone has received. You’ll see what caused the vibration.
Deeper fix: Some apps vibrate for different reasons. Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter vibrate when someone goes live or when there are new stories. Turn off vibrations per app. Go to Settings → Apps → find the app → Notifications → turn off vibration. Also check Settings → Sound & vibration → Vibration intensity. Turn down the vibration for notifications if it’s too strong.
Problem 20: Phone Won’t Connect to Mobile Data
You turn off WiFi. You see the 4G or 5G icon. But nothing loads. Websites won’t open.
Fast fix: Turn Airplane mode on for 10 seconds, then off. This resets your mobile data connection.
Deeper fix: Check that mobile data is actually on. Swipe down to open Quick Settings. Make sure the Mobile data icon is highlighted. Go to Settings → Network & internet → SIMs (or Mobile network) → turn on Mobile data. Check your APN settings. Go to Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Access Point Names. Make sure the correct APN for your carrier is selected. If you see multiple APNs, contact your carrier to get the right one. If nothing works, reset network settings. Settings → System → Reset options → Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth.
Bonus: Three General Tips That Fix Most Android Problems
Before you try anything complicated, do these three things. They fix more than half of all Android problems.
Restart your phone once a week. Android phones run for weeks without a restart. Temporary glitches build up. A simple restart clears them all.
Keep your phone updated. Go to Settings → System → System update once a month. Updates fix bugs and security problems.
Don’t install random apps. Many problems come from bad apps. Only install apps from the Play Store with high ratings and many downloads. Read the permissions before installing.
When to Take Your Phone to a Repair Shop
If you tried the fixes above and the problem still happens, it might be hardware. Take your phone to a repair shop if:
- The screen is cracked or has dead spots
- The phone won’t turn on after charging and force restarting
- The battery drains completely in under two hours of normal use
- You hear strange sounds from the speaker or earpiece
- The phone gets hot enough to be uncomfortable to hold
- Water got inside the phone
Most other problems are software. And software problems have software fixes.
Most Android problems can be solved without a trip to the repair shop. By keeping your software updated and performing regular “digital cleaning,” you can extend the life of your device significantly.
